In the bathroom’s medicine cabinet, Ryan didn’t find any pain killers or antibiotic ointment for Sophie’s wounds. He headed to the store. Demon’s wounds could become infected, and Sophie’s were no exception. After he paid, he got into his car and made a phone call to an old friend, a detective with Seattle PD.

“Hello.” The voice was the same—gruff, no nonsense, authoritative.

“Sir, it’s Ryan Campbell.”

“Campbell? How long’s it been since I saw you, son?”

“Two years ago.” When Ryan had been sent to Seattle to track and kill Cage Steele. “You’d just wrapped up your last case and had announced your retirement. I stopped by the station to wish you luck.” Devon Rockshire had been his mentor at Portland PD prior to accepting a position with Seattle PD.

“That’s right. What can I do for you?”

“You got a moment to meet me for a drink? I have questions about a homicide you investigated.”

“Which one?”

“The Sinclairs’.”

“Sure. When?”

“How about three, at King’s Bar?”

“I’ll be there.”

“Thanks, sir.” Ryan hung up.

King’s Bar—the place where he’d run into his past, hoping to make her his future. Now, what he wanted was the truth about the woman he had held as she died in his arms. Back then, she had bled red with no hint of blue. Had something happened to her in the blurred lines between life and death?
